Information to applicants

Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue (NCPD), based in Lillehammer, Norway, invites applications for an educational programme in peace and dialogue work. 
We will select a group of experienced participants recruited from Afghanistan, Iraqi Kurdistan and Bosnia- Hercegovina, 2 participants from each country together with the same number from diaspora communities in Norway. This gives 12 participants with different experiences in post-conflict and conflict areas. The seminar is planned and organised by the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue. Our staff will also be responsible for teaching and facilitation. 

The overall aim of the programme is to strengthen the participants practical skills and theoretical uderstanding of peace, dialogue and reconciliation work. Through this training programme we hope to learn more about peace and dialogue work practiced in the field in your regions. We also want to explore how diaspora groups can contribute in peacebuilding. As far as we know this is the first time a training with paricipants from conflict areas and their diasporas is organised. From this unique experience we hope to increase our understanding and improve our efforts for dialogue and peace. 

Who can apply?

To apply for this programme you need to have
  • good skills in English
  • experience that is relevant for the programme; peace education, human rights work, development work, intercultural work, mediation etc.
  • your age should be between 20 and 40
  • you work or study in Afghanistan, Iraqi Kurdistan or Bosnia - Hercegovina or in Norway, originally coming from one of these three countries

Recruitement

Recruitment will take place through written applications and interviews.  Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue is responsible for the process, and will travel to the relevant areas for interviews.
Participants will be prioritized according to the following criteria:
  • Motivation for the programme
  • Willingness to enter into dialogue with people of different opinions and attitudes
  • Institutional connection; be part of a social setting where implementation of change is possible
  • Motivation for making use of the learning achieved 
  • Skills in English, oral and written
  • Relevant experience 
  • Balance in gender and group affiliation
We expect participants to:
  • Participate in the complete 25 day seminar (compulsory)
  • Prepare for the participation, and actively work with acquired knowledge
  • Make use of the learning in the seminar through being involved in dialogue – and peace work in the future

Fees

There are no fees 
 There are no fees for the participants, except for pocket money during the stay. This programme is sponsered by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Travel to and from Lillehammer as well as lodging and meals is payed by the organsier.

Where?

The Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue is part of the Nansen Academy in Lillehammer, Norway. The Nansen Academy is a boarding school. Participants will live in the school with in the student hostel with students at the Nansen Academy. Most of the rooms are single rooms with access to shared bathroom.

Applications

An application form is made for the purpose of this seminar. Applications should be submittred by November 11 for applicants from Bosnia-Hercegovina and Iraqi Kurdistan, and December 1st for applicants from Afghanistan and Norwegian residents. Interviews of selected candidates will be conducted in November / December 2011 by NCPD staff. Selection of candidates is to be finalised by end of December.
